Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the most common questions. Missing something? Send us feedback below.

What is MyArboris?

A private, web-based workspace for family history research: build family trees, record people, events and places, document every fact with sources and evidence, and preserve your family's story for the generations after you.

Can I try MyArboris?

Yes. The demo page shows MyArboris with an entirely invented example family. For your own family tree, create an account.

Can I import a GEDCOM file?

Yes. Before anything is saved you see a preview with people, families, sources and notices. Optionally you can add a ZIP archive with the related photos and documents. An import always creates a new family tree.

Which GEDCOM version is supported?

GEDCOM 5.5.1, including files from MyHeritage. Files of other versions are read as far as possible and marked with a notice in the preview.

Can I export my data again?

Yes, at any time: as a GEDCOM 5.5.1 file, plus reports and lists as PDF or CSV and the tree view as SVG, PNG or PDF.

Are my family trees public?

No. Family trees are visible only to your account. Only if you explicitly create a read-only share link can someone without an account see parts of a tree — and even then only names and living/deceased status. Share links can be revoked at any time.

How do sources, citations and evidence work?

The source is the book, register or archival record, for example a baptism register. The citation is the exact place within it (page, folio, entry). The evidence is the scan, photo or PDF that shows it. That way every fact stays traceable.

Can I upload scans and photos?

Yes. Photos and documents can be attached to people, events and evidence. One file can be linked in several places without being stored twice.

Which archives does MyArboris recognize?

Currently links from Kirchenbücher Südtirol, Matriken Tirol (beta), Matricula Online (beta), Archion and FamilySearch. How much is recognized differs by archive. Links from other websites can still be saved as a normal web link.

What does “Bring Your Own Storage” mean?

You can connect your own S3-compatible storage, for example Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, AWS S3 or MinIO. New photos and documents are then stored there. The family-tree data itself stays with MyArboris.

Where are my files stored?

By default privately in MyArboris storage on Cloudflare R2; they are delivered only through short-lived, signed-in links. If you have connected your own storage, new files are stored there.

Is there a dark mode?

Yes. You can choose light, dark or system; “system” follows your device's setting.

Is there a family book?

Not yet — it is planned. The aim is that people, life stories, photos, documents, places and sources in MyArboris can become a carefully designed family book.

What happens when I delete my account?

All your family trees, the files stored in MyArboris storage and your account are deleted. MyArboris does not delete files in connected own storage (BYOS); they remain there. Database backups are kept on a rotating basis and overwritten after about six months at the latest.
